BIKES, CARS and RECESSION

I saw on the news today that more bikes than cars are being sold in Italy for the first time because of the recession and high fuel costs. It mademe think that perhaps electric bikes will become more frequent on our roads, possibly cheaper as top brands dominate and mass produce. Also, I wonder if technology will bring down proces of batteries so that not only do bikes become cheaper but they are also enabled to go a lot further between charges.

I understand that e-bikes are far more popular on the Continent than in the uK. They are used as cargo carriers, for instance, to replace vans. Also, what we consider a mid-range bike here would be bottom of the range in places like Holland and germany.
