This site is about my research while looking for an electric bike for myself – a somewhat unfit 61 year old with creaky knees. I hope the pages here are of some use to others. In the end, my choice which is shown above – the Raleigh Velo Cite 2012 – was determined by factors more to do with security than excitement. Raleigh, now German owned, have a good reputation. Parts are easy to obtain. Buying from a local dealer (The Bike Factory in Chester) was an important consideration. As to the bike itself, it has a big load bearing capacity of 120 Kg, and comes in two frame sizes of 50 and 55cm so is suitable for taller riders. It’s ideal for commuting and light track riding with reassuring big wheels.
I feel sort of sad not to have one of the several other bike brands I have been attracted by. In particular I almost feel like apologising to Juicy, Batribike and other small producers who have honest ethics and products. Giant and Kalkhoff are two big manufacturers whose more expensive bikes should certainly continue to attract buyers quite rightly.
I’ll keep up this blog to let you know how I am feeling about my new bike which I have had for a few days.
Note that the 2013 version comes with a significantly lighter battery with a slightly larger capacity. My only problem so far has been to carry my bike upstairs!
